Students of Roxbury

I have always thought the young adults in Roxbury are a great group of kids. I've learned something recently that has made me realize just how proud we should all be of them.

A graduate of Roxbury HS has started a facebook group to promote the passing of the school budget. The comment on the page is that whether or not they realize it, they got a lot more from their public education than they may realize - everyone deserves a good education and "here in America all children should be entitled".

What an incredible kid! They are empowering each other to not only get involved in their community and public education, but also to use their power to vote. They've even given the information on absentee ballots for those that are away at school.

They also realize that the last budget passed by a small margin - so every vote counts. A township the size of Roxbury, and only about 10% actually get out and vote for a school election. The schools in a district are one of the biggest draws for a new homeowner - and yet so few people get involved in deciding who makes those decisions. Think about yourself - as a newly married couple planning for a family, or as the parent of children of various ages. If you were in the market for a new home - which would you prefer - a town that seems to regularly pass the budget and obviously cares about the education of the students, or a township where the budget fails just about every year - and cuts are continuously being made? Your home values depend upon how much we care about our schools.

This also brings up one last point about the budget. For anyone who thinks a failed budget DOESN'T hurt the kids - think about the fact that these kids have taken it upon themselves to create this group and promote it through their own contacts because even they realize the effect a failed budget has on them - because most of them have already lived through the consequences.

Which brings me back to one of my original statements on this blog - What life comes down to is what consequences can you live with?
