Proposed Calendar
The proposed calendar is up on the district website. I was amazed at how difficult it was this year - it seems everything was working against the calendar being an easy situation. Labor Day is late, Rosh Hashanah is only a few days after Labor Day, Easter is VERY late so it is right on top of state testing, and our Project Graduation date, which is set extremely far in advance, is early. Trying to get 180 days into the calendar with the appropriate snow days was difficult. The effort was made to have the students come back after Labor Day. The effort was also made to make sure that there was one full week break - unlike this year where we are losing a day of spring break due to the snow days. So - at the end of the day the group of 25 or so people in the room came up with a plan. It is a pretty radical idea of a schedule (to use the words of one of the attendees) - a change, but maybe a positive one. I know some people are adverse to change - but look at the calendar with an open mind - and you might find out that it just might work out well.

Annette, what happens if just like this year we use more than the allotted 4 emergency days? There's no break time left to take away, except for Good Friday and Memorial Day.
ReplyDeleteThat's why we decided to table the calendar last night and have another meeting. The snow just a few days after the calendar meeting sent many of us into a worry about the idea of it happening again next year. The idea of changing to a week in Feb was not an effort to throw people a loop - it was an effort to guarantee one full week vacation that wouldn't be taken away by a snow day (like this year's spring break). I think we've realized we just can't guarantee that. Not sure when the next calendar meeting will be yet - but we are going back to re-think the whole calendar. I just hope people realize none of the changes were done for any reason than trying to get the best arrangement as possible. We were trying to not start until after Labor Day since parents prefer that, keep some days off around Easter (even though we had to worry about when the election would be and when state testing would be), all the while paying attention to our Project Graduation date of June 20.
